Slowly but surely this Swedish carmaker is coming out of its shell. Previously known for the utilitarian safety of its cars, but not much else, Volvo has recently been dabbling in design and flair. The result has been a trickle of interesting cars like the C30 coupé and the C70 convertible, both of which combine desirability with a degree of driving pleasure. That’s not to say that Volvo has totally abandoned its roots: the V70 is still the ultimate large estate, and the smaller V50 is a very neat and practical estate extension of the design-rich S40.
The S40’s bigger brother, the 5-Series-sized S60, majors on comfort and value relative to the German opposition. Like all big cars, the S80 saloon drops a lot of its worth in the first year, giving it plenty of appeal for the used buyer. Equipment levels are huge and very much designed with human comfort in mind. Volvo seats are generally regarded as the best in the business. Volvo’s big SUV, the XC90, has been competing strongly against BMW’s excellent X5 but its relative age is just beginning to work against its previously unshakeable secondhand values.
