The VW badge on the back says it all: quality and reliability for the masses. Less so for the masses in more recent times though, as Volkswagen continues its steady climb up the aspirational pole. There’s a compressed look about the 2008 range which should have some lowering effect on secondhand values but it doesn’t seem to be happening. The small but well formed VW Lupo has been replaced by the larger and not quite so well-built VW Fox. Used VW Lupo GTIs are a lot of fun, but expensive: the 1.4 turbo diesels (still available in the VW Polo) entertain by delivering similar performance in a stealthy way.
VW Golfs, VW Passats and VW Jettas are all best with diesel power. The VW Touran is a fine, small MPV. Every desirable secondhand Volkswagen seems to have covered high mileage, and they can take it too, but they’re not infallible: cambelts snap just as easily on VWs as they do on less lofty marques. If you can see past the branding issues, the Phaeton is a fabulously well built and capable large saloon. Find a secondhand one (not many around) and you’ll be amazed at the value on offer.
