Attempts to liven up the slightly dowdy Vauxhall image seem to be working. The introduction of motorsport-inspired VXR performance cars has brought some much-needed credibility to the range, while non-halo products like the new Corsa (a multiple award winner) strongly reflect good design and build quality standards. In pure performance terms the Astra VXR is hot hatch class leader, quite an achievement considering the opposition. There’s an unruly edge about the VXR cars, but that seems to be part of the appeal for the enthusiasts who are happily buying them.
Some models like the Signum and Meriva are yet to find their markets, while at the other extreme the Vectra’s popularity is also its undoing: you’d have no trouble finding a used one that’s just right for you, but only the high-spec models have any chance of setting you apart from a company rep. The Vectra estate is highly recommended as a load carrier. Astras are everywhere. The old Mk 4 might be more tempting as a used purchase if there weren’t so many ex-lease or ex-hire Mk 5s around.
