A byword for ‘turn it on and drive’ motoring, Toyotas are incredibly reliable, but a certain lack of character and the abandonment of sporting ambition in the road car range has held them back in the face of more dynamic competition. The Auris in particular is a car in search of an identity. On the used front, the old Corolla (replaced by the Auris) still commands decent money, particularly when it’s powered by Toyota’s fine D-4D diesel engine or when it’s specified at the T-Spirit trim level.
Moving up the range, the Avensis provides solid if unexciting transport, while the Prius is an entirely useable and practical hybrid best bought for its relaxing drive than for its headline-grabbing super-economy claims. Corolla Verso is sought after for its seating versatility, and Land Cruisers don’t look quite so fearsome now in the age of Audi Q7s and Mercedes GLs. The RAV4 is expensive for a small SUV but it has a strong following. The Aygo is a sweet little city car but it’s more expensive than the identical Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107 – that’s the price you pay for branding.
