The jokes are over: the success of the Fabia and the Octavia means that Skoda is now a totally credible carmaker. Volkswagen mechanicals and near-VW levels of build quality deliver a fulfilling ownership experience, whether it’s pure functionality you want or a really special sporting drive in the shape of the vRS Fabia and Octavia models. A stutter in the UK marketing push has failed to drive home the Skoda message among British buyers, with the result that the follow-up wave of cars like the quirky and interesting Roomster have not been completely understood or accepted here.
That’s good news for those used buyers who are lucky enough to spot any examples that escape from the tightly-controlled Skoda dealership network. Minicab drivers don’t pick cars for fun: the Octavia chosen by many of them is a terrific combination of space, value, and robust build quality. The Superb is absolutely huge inside but not at all daunting to drive. With three-year-old examples now available at under £7k, the Superb is aptly named if value is your priority.
