Spain’s only carmaker has made huge progress since switching allegiance from Fiat to Volkswagen. Quality is now in the top echelon, and the company’s brand image as the sporting arm of the Volkswagen/Audi group has been firmly established by consistent success on European racetracks. The Cupra sub-brand that has spun off SEAT’s motorsports effort has produced Ibizas and Leons that are as focused and capable as anything
Ride quality can be a little firm on the Cupras but the slightly watered-down FR models, especially the sporting diesels, offer nearly the same driving experience. The striking styling of the new Leon initially kept values of the previous Leon high, but these are settling down now. That same ‘new wave’ styling didn’t help the new Toledo but if you’re able to get past that then it’s a truly massive vehicle up for grabs at bargain prices. The smaller Altea multi activity vehicle is probably the best all-round SEAT, but for unexpected thrills try a 130PS – or even a 160PS – Ibiza diesel. Wait till mid-’08 though: that’s when the upcoming new Ibiza will depress old model prices nicely.
