In times past, Saabs were not altogether fancifully touted as the natural choice of airline pilots. The Swedish firm’s more recent association with General Motors has diluted its brand value somewhat, with the result that your money now buys a lot of car. On paper at least the 9-3 is a match for the 3-Series: a revamp has made the old 9-3s ridiculously cheap. In style terms the 9-3 Sportwagon is ahead of the BMW. Turbocharged petrol Saabs are not as popular as the 1.9 turbodiesels
Many new car outlets discount the unloved 9-5 saloon to a lower price than the 9-3, but the big 9-5 Estate still makes a lot of sense as a well thought out load-lugger in the Volvo mould. Cabin comfort generally is excellent with some nice touches that are still unique to Saab like the clever ‘night panel’ dash.
