Peugeot 407
Coupe
There are plenty of coupes around, but the 407 doesn’t fit into the little gang that’s made up of regulars such as the Nissan 350Z, Audi TT and Mazda RX-8. It just isn’t sporting enough; although Peugeot stiffened and lowered the 407 saloon’s chassis, the resulting coupe still lacks the nimbleness and poise of its rivals.
It feels more at home on the motorway than on a country road. There’s no faulting the performance of the V6 petrol engine and the choice doesn’t end there, thanks to a smaller 2.2-litre petrol engine and a meaty V6 diesel on offer. Inside, Peugeot has gone for a high-tech look, but to some it will appear cluttered and gimmicky. Although the rear is cramped, there is room for four adults and plenty of boot space, too.

Running Costs
At launch, car cost experts were predicting that the 407 Coupe would be worth 35% of what you paid for it after three years. That’s woeful when you consider the old-shape Audi TT was still predicted to retain 52% and the Mazda RX-8 49%. Still, it does make the Peugeot very cheap to buy used. The 407’s lengthy service intervals also take some of the hassle out of ownership, and servicing costs are competitive; it will be cheaper to look after than the Audi and cost around the same as the Mazda. The V6 engines attract group 16 insurance and it’s only one group less for the 2.2-litre, which returns 30.7mpg. The V6 diesel returns 33.2mpg and the petrol V6 27.6mpg.

Estate
Never mind outright space, feel the versatility. That’s one of the 407 SW’s main appeals as a family estate. The load bay isn’t as big as many rivals’ but it’s a useful shape and accessed by a split-opening tailgate. The rear seats split and fold to leave a virtually flat load floor, which is probably no more than you'd expect, but to swallow even longer loads, the backrest of the front passenger seat also folds flat - very neat. Those in the front have plenty of space and the estate’s higher roofline creates more rear headroom than in the saloon. There’s stacks of kit, too, but all those buttons on the dash can be confusing. The diesel engines suit the car far better than the petrols. Their undemanding low-down response is more in tune with the 407's softer, more comfort-biased drive. Even so, many rivals ride more smoothly, and many more are sharper in corners, too, where the Peugeot feels slow-witted.

Running Costs
There are enough used ones around to keep prices keen – and the ever-growing supply is likely to make them even cheaper - so ensure you haggle hard if you’re buying a nearly new example. The diesels are more expensive to buy, but they’re far more frugal than the petrols, as well as much nicer to drive. Our favourite model, the 2.0 HDi, gives an average of 47mpg and the 1.6 HDi extends that to just over 50mpg. The 2.7 V6 diesel isn’t so good at 33mpg, and even the 1.8 and 2.0 petrols beat that, although the 3.0 V6 petrol is even worse, landing you with an official average of 28.5mpg. Service costs are about as cheap as you’ll get for a family estate and insurance is modest if you avoid the group 15 V6 models. The 2.0 HDi is group 10-12, depending on trim level, and the 1.6 HDi just group 8.

Saloon
Show it a motorway and it will keep you happy all day long. Every engine cruises quietly, wind and road noise are subdued and the ride is comfortable at speed. Your passengers will enjoy the ride, too, as the cabin will take five of you without too much of a push, although six-footers will find headroom tight in the rear. Being a saloon, it isn't as versatile as a family hatch, but the large boot is family-friendly. Check you can get on with the driving position – some drivers just can’t get comfy. The sheer number of fiddly buttons on the dashboard look confusing, but most owners say they quickly learn the half dozen or so needed for daily driving. You’ll notice that the ride isn’t too hot at slower speeds or over broken surfaces. And, the 407 isn’t that much better on twisty country lanes where, despite good grip, it’s far from agile and the steering is numb.

Running Costs
Your bank manager will approve. The initial outlay won’t be too steep because there’s no shortage of supply, so prices aren't too high. Cut a keen deal, though, or you may lose more cash than you expect when you resell, especially if you’re buying a nearly new 407. You’ll struggle to find a cheaper family saloon to service and, should anything go wrong outside the three-year/60,000-mile warranty, Peugeots are one of the cheapest cars to fix, according to a leading warranty company. Insurance won’t be a bind either, provided you avoid the V6s, which weigh in at a hefty group 16 or 15. Our favoured 2.0 HDi nets you a group 10-12 premium, depending on trim level, and the 2.0 petrol group 12. The 1.6 HDi and 1.8 petrol are group 8. V6s apart, all are easy on the juice. The diesels do 46-51mpg and the petrols 31-26mpg.
