Mitsubishi’s UK range is an unusual mix of the new and the not-so-new, bookended by the tiny i city car and the venerable but still capable Shogun 4x4. Between those two contrasts you’ll find more extremes, the choice of saloons for example coming down to the sub-£10k Lancer or the £28k-and-counting Evo X. The range may be small but it covers every base in the shape of the competent Colt supermini (also available as a Cabriolet), the stylish Grandis MPV, the new Outlander SUV (a joint venture with Citroën and Peugeot), the excellent value Lancer Estate and of course the iconic L200 pickup.
Tough construction and metronomic reliability are attributed to Mitsubishi’s long and distinguished rally heritage. Tight supply and price control by the UK distributors make it tough to find deals on new cars. Used Evos can be temptingly cheap, and they are pretty bulletproof (not to mention surprisingly practical, thanks to a big boot) but servicing and running costs are high. If you’re looking for a very good value used saloon the Carisma (the Lancer’s predecessor) is worth a look
