Not so much a brand, more a marketing phenomenon, the new Mini has brilliantly echoed the original 50-year-old concept by appealing to the same classless market. There’s a basic Mini One, available with either petrol or diesel engines, a slightly sportier Mini Cooper, a substantially sportier Cooper S, a Cabriolet, and now a Clubman estate. All are great to drive and packed with character.
A huge choice of options and paint schemes means you’d be unlucky to see another one exactly like yours. That level of personalisation could easily have combined with massive demand to make used prices prohibitively high, but the numbers of new Minis sold has in fact kept prices reasonably sensible. The outlook is even brighter now for used Mini buyers thanks to the recent launch of a new and improved model. Don’t pay over the odds for very heavily optioned cars: their loss should be your gain. Very early cars had a few odd problems but the build quality of the BMW built Mini is now generally excellent.
