When Lexus was launched as the official luxury arm of Toyota, the aim was quite simply to build the best cars in the world. Although competitors like Mercedes and BMW have more than matched the Japanese brand’s offerings on performance, Lexus continues to deliver on its promise in the areas of quality, refinement and luxury. Dealer backup is legendary, offering the nearest thing to bespoke attention in the production car world.
You won’t need much of it outside the normal service programme because Lexus regularly tops used car reliability and security surveys. In the IS250 (now with a diesel option) Lexus finally has a credible 3-Series rival – and used buyers suddenly have plenty of IS200s to choose from. The midrange GS challenges the 5-Series on build quality and refinement, if not on driver involvement, while the S-Class-rivalling LS is a mobile oasis in both 4.6-litre V8 and 5-litre V8 plus electric hybrid LS600h versions. Other Lexus hybrid cars like the RX400 SUV and the GS450h saloon blend petrol and electric power just as seamlessly. Don’t equate hybrid with boring or slow, either: the GS is a genuinely potent car.
