Under Ford’s ownership, Jaguar’s future was seen to be in mass production at the BMW 3-Series level, and in traditional shapes and values at the executive and luxury levels. Neither plan worked. Now, the company that gave us the E-Type is back doing what it does best: producing quality sporting vehicles at attainable prices. The good news is that the company’s high engineering values weren’t compromised during the wilderness years. Jaguar engines generally, and diesels in particular, remain jewels of power and economy
Chassis, bodywork and human interface technologies are all class-equalling at least. Best of all, the magical (and still unique) Jaguar cabin ambience has been successfully preserved. Old reliability and quality issues have been largely laid to rest too, making a used Jaguar an inspired alternative to the usual German-dominated choices. The aluminium-bodied XJ was never anything other than superb, but the X-Type and even the S-Type have also been quietly honed into excellent cars, albeit in the ‘old’ Jaguar mould. If you can get over that mental hurdle you will be delighted by the Jaguar ownership experience.
