Korean cars didn’t get the best start in the UK market, but lessons have been learnt quickly. Now Hyundai is seriously challenging established ‘quality’ brands on their own terms – and winning. Hyundai’s new Focus/Golf-class i30 has regularly beaten its more illustrious opponents in road tests, not just on the traditional Korean features of high specification and low purchase/running costs but also on build quality and pure driver enjoyment
The i30 is the precursor of a new wave of ‘European style’ Hyundais. With the honourable exception of the seven-seat Santa Fe, there’s an older feel about the rest of the UK range, but that opens up opportunities for the used buyer, especially when they’re backed by Hyundai’s extraordinary trump card of a five-year warranty. The big Tucson 4x4 and Matrix mini-MPV both depreciate quite heavily in the first year so make excellent sense as a 2/3-year old purchase. What Car? magazine made the Getz its Car of the Year. Used examples are rare but that amazing warranty makes them worth seeking out.
