After looking into the abyss a couple of years ago Italy’s best known carmaker is getting up on a wave. Today’s Fiat is a very different animal to the flimsy products of yore. The renaissance started with the standard-setting Panda and is now flowing through the rest of the range. Sharp styling influences from Fiat’s blue-chip marques Ferrari and Maserati are trickling down nicely to mainstream Fiats like the new Grande Punto and Bravo.
Add in mechanical strength, intelligent design, good passenger protection, a zippy driving experience and low costs and suddenly the Fiat package is looking very attractive. Interesting used targets include Bravo’s predecessor, the Stilo, a car that didn’t get British hearts fluttering but which is nevertheless a well-built and capable small family car, especially when it’s powered by Fiat’s brilliant MultiJet diesel engine.
The Sedici soft-roader and kooky but still effective Multipla are also worth a look. The new Fiat 500 promises more than it delivers in terms of driving fun but that won’t blunt its appeal as a Mini-style ‘halo’ brand. The upcoming relaunch of the historic and sporting Abarth arm will add more prestige to the Fiat name.
