Chrysler’s linkup with Mercedes is over now but the American firm learnt some good lessons about the needs of European drivers. Cars like the Passat-sized Chrysler Sebring have now been ‘engineered for Europe’ to make them more appealing to enthusiasts. The well-established Chrysler Voyager remains one of the biggest and most comfortable MPVs on British roads: its sliding side doors and pioneering fold-flat seating system – since copied by most other MPV manufacturers – endow it with truly impressive load-lugging abilities, and it’s really easy to drive too.
The ‘gangsta’ 300C (available as a saloon or a surprisingly useable estate) comes with a choice of massive V8 engines or, more usefully in the UK, with a punchy and relatively economical 3.0-litre diesel. Depreciation will be a bigger factor on Chryslers than on German cars, making them good used buys, and Chrysler equipment levels are high. So is the style: expect the niche appeal and relative rarity of models like the retro-style PT Cruiser and the headturning Crossfire coupé/convertible will continue to inspire a small but determined group of buyers on the used market for some time to come.
