Competition is always a good thing for the consumer. BMW’s ongoing battle with arch-rivals Audi has resulted in a range which fully backs the company’s claim to deliver the ultimate driving experience. BMW’s fixation with rear-wheel-drive delivers near-perfect chassis composure and brilliant handling. Mechanical sophistication is another big BMW plus. Sceptics doubting the power and flexibility of the smallest BMW diesels are quickly persuaded by cars like the 120d and 320d. Refinement is astonishing
If you’re after a 3-Series, look for an SE at least, or a Sport if you can stretch to it. The six-cylinder cars are nice, but even the ‘basic’ 2-litre 318 is a lovely drive. Used petrol-engined 5- and 7-Series cars represent brilliant value for the lower-mileage motorist. Young family buyers on a budget can opt for the X3 compact SUV and the 1-Series, and the recently-revamped X5 is also becoming a more affordable used buy. All new BMWs tend to be fully optioned, making them a used buyer’s dream. BMW’s i-Drive control interface is initially daunting, but familiarity brings clarity, so don’t let it put you off.
